Rufus is another band she has joined. Khan was raised a Catholic. She studied at the Hyde Park Saint Thomas the Apostle Church's elementary school. Her love for music to her mother who gave her a taste of jazz when she was an infant. Khan started listening to rhythm and blues when she was in her preteen years. In 1969 she quit the Panthers, having previously attended Calumet High School. She was a performer in Chicago along with Cash McCall and his group Lyfe, which also included Hassan Khan. Chaka along with Hassan Khan were married in the 1970s.
